This stretch of the old A417 became a layby when the road was upgraded to a dual carriageway. You can see one of the old cat's-eyes still in the road (bottom right). Until the early 1960's there was a petrol station here, (near where the toilet block now stands) kept by an elderly lady. The pumps were hand operated. This remnant of the old road is named 'Granny's Pumps' on the map, after her. (Thanks to Mr. Fred Sheppard for this information.)
