Fox Wood, Nottinghamshire

Earthwork in Fox Wood

Uploader's Comments

There is a substantial network of embankments and ditches in the wood, labelled as an ancient 'Settlement'. Excavations have shown that these date back to the Iron Age, running through to the Roman period. They are typical of what is traditionally called a hill fort, generally representing a main local settlement. The site is a Scheduled Monument, although it has no accessible description.
