Hall Green is a stop lock, that is one where the change in water level is very small; these are often found at or near the end of one canal and the junction with another and were built to minimise water loss from one company to the other. Nowadays they are just a minor irritation for boaters. Technically, Hall Green Lock marks the southern end of the Macclesfield Canal, because the canal south of here was built by the Trent and Mersey company; in practice, however, the Macclesfield Canal is generally regarded as ending at Hardings Wood Junction where it meets the Trent and Mersey main line.
