With ships carrying radar and position fixing equipment using GPS technology the humble fog horn has had its day. The Fair Isle fog horn at the North Light was redundant even before the lighthouse keepers left and the light was switched on and off automatically. The path from the lighthouse to the fog horn was enclosed by strong hand rails at each side to ensure the keepers were not blown away in winter storms. Today the path is accessible at your own risk. Part of the cliff has gone and there is a notice to alert you to the subsidence.
