East Arnecliff Wood, North Yorkshire

Remnants of a pond in the wood

Uploader's Comments

The landscape within East Arnecliff Wood is a bit of a puzzle. There are outcrops of sandstone and several pits. Were these signs of former quarrying, or perhaps iron ore extraction? Then there's this almost dried up pond with the remains of a sluice at one end. Why was it here and what was it used for? A search of old OS 6" maps reveals nothing, not even the pond which is shown on the current 1:25000 map.
