Dronfield, small town, par., and township, with ry. sta., E. Derbyshire, 6 miles NW. of Chesterfield -- par., 16,001 ac., pop. 10,483; township, 2589 ac., pop. 5169; town, pop. 4331; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank; was formerly a market town, and has still an annual cattle fair. Dronfield is situated in the iron district between Chesterfield and Sheffield, and has large edge-tool, scythe, and sickle manufactories; iron foundries, chemical works, &c. In the vicinity are several coal mines. The grammar-school was founded in 1579.
