What you can glimpse between the trees, are the remains, such as they are, of Dowles Manor. The house was dated 1560, although some or all of it was thought to date from about 60 years later. It was partially destroyed by a mysterious fire in 1982. Following this the remains were all but replaced by a new house, without permission, which subsequently was demolished. The corrugated iron covering partially hides what remains. The loss of the house was particularly sad because it contained some amazingly preserved decorative wall paintings. The photograph was taken from the old railway line.
