Denbrook Plantation, Devon

The bell of St Martin's chapel, Broadnymett

Uploader's Comments

Remarkably, there is still a bell here. This chapel served the parish of Broad Nymet (Broadnymet, Broadnymett, take your pick of spelling) from before 1332 until 1839 when the tiny parish was amalgamated with North Tawton. It had become a sinecure parish. Pevsner draws attention to the roof, door and windows. Hoskins (Devon) comments "[it] is one of the rare ruined parish churches of Devon and is worth a pilgrimage to this rather remote spot. ... It is an interesting little building and should be rescued from its desecration, but no one seems to care about its fate." The farmer at the nearby barton visits it regularly and does care for it - hooray!
