The lock-up at Deeping St James, Lincolnshire

Uploader's Comments

The ancient stone lock-up at Deeping St James, near Bourne, began life as a market cross during the reign of Edward III in the 14th century but in 1819 it was converted for use as the village roundhouse or lock-up where miscreants were incarcerated for petty offences such as drunkenness and vagrancy before appearing before the magistrates the following morning. Extensive restoration was carried out in 1999 to ensure that it remains a tourist attraction for many years to come.
