Memorial cairn

Uploader's Comments

Framed by the bulk of Carn Liath, this memorial cairn marks the spot where King Charles I's standard was raised by James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose on 30 August 1644. Backed by an army largely composed of Highland and Irish soldiers, Montrose was initially successful against the armies of the Covenant, but his defeat at Philiphaugh on 13 September 1645, and later capture and execution, marked the end of the Royalist cause in Scotland.
