The kissing gate here marks the point where the footpath leaves the wooded area at the western end of the Shawl and cuts across open pastureland towards the farm at Tullis Cote. The distant view picks out the 'stepped' nature of the hillside below Penhill, where alternate bands of limestones, sandstones and shales typify the scenery of the Yoredale series of rocks.
