Old Church House, Market Place, Colyton

Uploader's Comments

Grade II Listed house of 1612. Various pictures from about 1908 to 1978 show the gable end fully rendered. This was the former meeting-place of Colyton's Council, the Feoffees, established in the 16th century. Colyton Grammar School (established in 1546 or 1559 according to the History Society) report that they moved into the building in 1612 "which had been enlarged by having another storey built onto it"; that would suggest the origins of the building pre-date 1612. However an original ledger discovered in late 2010 details the cost of building in 1612 and I infer that this refers to the whole building, not just an extension. Why then is it called the Old Church House? The school officially moved out to its new buildings on 15th January 1929.
