Doctors Gate is an old pack horse trail and the course of an old Roman road. In this photograph you can see part of a new fence that has been erected alongside Shelf brook, this fence runs the entire length of the valley, it is designed to keep sheep out of one half of the valley to prevent over grazing but at the moment there are sheep on both sides of the fence.
