Cocklaw Fell, Cumbria

The southern shore of Skeggles Water

Uploader's Comments

Skeggles Water is a large tarn set in very bleak moorland surroundings. On a blue sky day with snow-streaked fells and fluffy white clouds it shows its best face. According to Wainwright it is 'an uninviting place with attractions mainly for bird-watchers and anglers' ('The Outlying Fells of Lakeland'). He goes on to mention that there was a proposal to extract diatomite http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatomaceous_earth from the tarn which was defeated by local people and amenity societies. It can be certain that had this gone ahead the scenery would not have been enhanced.
