The abrupt, craggy peak of Caw is possibly the finest fell that A. Wainwright left out of his original seven pictorial guides to the Lakeland Fells. He made amends a few years later by including it in his 'Outlying Fells' volume. It has all the characteristics that typify the archetypal Lakeland fell but it lies south of the Walna Scar pass which Wainwright took as his cut-off point. Although he never stated this, various commentators have assumed that volume 4 (The Southern Fells) would have been too unwieldy if he had included Caw and quite a few other worthy hills locally. Caw certainly beats Mungrisdale Common [[[2699375]]] into a cocked hat!
