Cashell Glen, Stirling

Green hairstreak, Cashel

Uploader's Comments

The green hairstreak (Callophrys rubi) is one of at least 16 species of butterflies recorded at Cashel. This particular individual was sitting on bracken at the edge of the track up the hill. Approaching the end of its short adult life, it looks a bit tatty, with many of its green scales now missing. It probably emerged in early May. The caterpillars feed on blaeberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), of which there is plenty beside the track further up the hill.
