This outcrop of Silurian grit has been smoothed off by glacial action. This typically produces a shallow, sloping side where the ice has ground along and a steep face formed by a 'plucking' effect. Beyond is the snow-dusted top of Red Screes whose corries will have contributed ice to the huge glaciers which ground their way out of the Lake District in past Ice Ages.
