The small village of Byton, on the Mortimer Trail and on the edge of the low-lying Combe Moor, was known in the dim and distant past as 'Boctune'. The church of St Mary here was Grade II listed on 17th December 1986 - it was of Saxon origin but rebuilt by the Normans and burnt down twice in years past.
