St Mary's Church, Buttsbury stands on its own on a rise above the River Wid. There is no village to speak of. According to The Shell Guide to Essex Buttsbury appears in the Domesday Book as 'Cinga'. Its medieval name was 'Ging-Joyberd-Laundry. Its present name derives from Botwulf's pear tree which was apparently growing around 1220.
