Former Butterley Iron Works on Derby Road

Uploader's Comments

This picture shows the remaining roadside buildings from what was Butterley Engineering which closed in 2009 having produced iron here since 1790. The future of the site is unclear - much of the fabric has been stripped out or demolished and as at the date of posting there's a planning application in progress for 300 or so houses on the land. Oddly enough the only building on site which is legally protected is the Grade II former toilet block in the centre of picture, standing alongside the unlisted but historically significant hexagonal gatehouse. This is the spot where in 1817 factory agent George Goodwin plus a few constables warded off the would-be 'Pentrich Revolutionaries' who had shown up with the aim of ransacking the factory for weapons. There's a plaque visible on the wall of the building which forms part of the 'Revolution Trail'.
