Viewed from the Housel Bay Hotel is Bumble Rock, Lion's Den and The Lizard Lighthouse but if you look closely: there is a silhouette of a sitting feline at the end of the promontory. Then; between there and the lighthouse, is the head and front leg of an alligator (lizard) - one eye is halfway up the slope. More prosaically the name "Lizard" is most probably a corruption of the Cornish name "Lys Ardh", meaning "high court".
