In his 'Outlying Fells of Lakeland' (1974) Alfred Wainwright states: 'Old timers will remember that the top was once adorned with a building, of which only a few relics now remain' and 'the railings, foundations and well of a former summerhouse, which was destroyed in a fire'. These posts may have been a gateway. This evening they were catching the last light of a rather stormy sunset with winds and fast-moving cloud shadows.
