Berrystell Fell, Carlisle

Fence junction north of Chew Green

Uploader's Comments

The right angle in the fence (bottom left to right) here marks the Border between England and Scotland. Chew Green, and the now deserted medieval village of Gamelpath just south-east, were once 'debate-able' lands, claimed by both Scotland and England. David Dippie Dixon in Upper Coquetdale (1903) tells how the first Ordnance Survey maps here, which showed the land (known as the 'Plea Shank') in Scottish hands, had to be withdrawn and redrawn at the instigation of the English landowner so that the land could be correctly depicted as disputed.
