Carloway Broch

Uploader's Comments

There is certainly plenty to ponder as you gaze at this amazing structure. The brochs were the most interesting and sophisticated buildings of the early Iron Age. They are circular towers, peculiar to Scotland, originally named from the Gaelic word 'bradh'(pronounced brawgh), meaning any round object. Nearly five hundred appear on the northernmost coasts and islands, of which Carloway is the best preserved. The broch, like many others, has been robbed of much stone, but still stands impressively to 30 feet.
