The original railway access to Aberdyfi was built in 1863, but demand for increased services meant that a ferry carrying the train from Ynyslas dunes was insufficient, and the Dovey Junction station was used to bring a spur line in from the south, thus effectively circumnavigating the Dyfi estuary. The works to carry that line include this lengthy tunnel under the town.
