Wikipedia lists many uses of field maize: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maize In the British Isles, maize (Zea mays) varieties may be grown for animal feed, or silage; more recently as a biogas feedstock; or for human consumption as sweetcorn or corn on the cob. There was a discussion about it in the Geograph forum back in 2007 http://www.geograph.org.uk/discuss/index.php?&action=vthread&forum=2&topic=6016&dontcount=1&page=0#1 The growers' website is http://www.maizegrowersassociation.co.uk
