Larches changing colour on Shorn Cliff

The European larch (Larix europaea) is one of only 3 conifers which are deciduous. Here, seen through a window of the ruined Tintern Abbey, the adjacent plantation begins to exhibit fresh spring growth. However it is doubtful that the Cistercian monks would have observed this transition, because the species is a relatively modern introduction into commercial forests.
