Batsford House was built between 1889 and 1892 by Bertram Mitford, the grandfather of the Mitford sisters, who lived here during the First World War. Their father David Freeman-Mitford inherited the title, 3rd Baron Redesdale on the death of his father, Bertram in 1916. David was the second son, his older brother, Clement was killed in 1915 in the First War World. After the end of the war in 1919 Batsford House was sold and the Mitford family moved to Asthall Manor in Oxfordshire.
