On the way to Ben Starav. This high boulderfield habitat is perfect for Ptarmigan and several were seen, including some young chicks. The standard route to Ben Starav is from the north so this area is relatively undisturbed. It was noticeable that all the Ptarmigan I saw in the mountains were away from standard Munro routes (and Munro baggers generally reported having seen very few on their wanders). This suggests they are pushed away from areas of higher disturbance and the area of available habitat to them is reduced.
