Cliff erosion at Cowbar

Uploader's Comments

Having not visited this particular stretch of coast for some years, it came as a surprise to see how much the cliffline has eroded and that Cowbar Lane has had to be repositioned a hundred metres or so further back. The photo can be compared with those taken by Colin Grice in July 2005 and by Mick Garrett in January 09. Cliffs here are boulder clay at the top, with layers of hard sandstone and softer shales beneath. As the shales are easily eroded by wave action, the rocks above are brought crashing down on to the shore.
