Bell Plantation, Shropshire

The Bell (3) - sign, Old Wenlock Road, Cross Houses near Shrewsbury

Uploader's Comments

This sign is on a post at the edge of the car park. The Bell is a common name for a public house or inn and reflects the close association that the church had with inns and taverns in the past and particularly in medieval times. Many religious establishments brewed church ales which were sold to increase income. The sound of the church bell was heard far and wide, particularly in the days before the noise of motor traffic etc. Frequently the pub would be located very near to the church. Quite often the pub name includes a number such as The Five Bells, to reflect the number of bells present in the church.
