Orton.-- small market town and par., Westmorland - par., 24,513 ac., pop. 1917; town, 3 miles NE. of Tebay sta. and 8 miles SW. of Appleby; P.O., T.O. Market-day, Wednesday. Orton is a place of great antiquity, and has a royal charter for markets. There is a spacious market-house for the sale of butter and other farm produce. A great cattle market is held on the first Wednesday of each month, and there are fairs for cattle, horses, sheep, and lambs. The church is ancient, and has some portions of 12th century. Orton Scar, 2 miles N., was at one time used as a beacon.
