Melbourne.-- town and par. with ry. sta., in co. and 7½ miles SE. of Derby, 3290 ac., pop. 3123; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank; has considerable mfrs. of thread, silk, boots, &c.; Melbourne Castle was dismantled in 1460; the bishops of Carlisle had a palace here; the church is a fine specimen of a Norman building; near the church is Melbourne Hall, seat of Earl Cowper, and formerly of Lord Melbourne; Melbourne is noted for its market gardens.
