Eccles.-- town and par. with ry. sta., SE. Lancashire, on river Irwell, 4 miles W. of Manchester, of which it is practically an outlying suburb -- par., 22,028 ac. (290 water), pop. 98,187; town, pop. 11,143; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank, 2 newspapers; the cotton mfr. is extensively carried on. The Right Hon. Wm. Huskisson died at Eccles from the injuries he received at the opening (1830) of the Liverpool and Manchester Ry.
