Calne, town and mun. bor. and par., N. Wilts, 6 miles SE. of Chippenham and 99 W. of London by rail -- par., 8079 ac., pop. 5194; town, 410 ac., pop. 3405; mun. bor., 939 ac., pop. 2474; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Wednesday, has flax-mills, paper-mills, and flour-mills, but the principal trade is the curing of bacon. The bor. returned 1 member until 1885.
