Old limestone quarry on Kepwick Bank

Uploader's Comments

The hillside above Kepwick was a source of good quality limestone which was quarried here over a long period. On the ridge top are shallow quarries, most likely for local building material and to provide the raw material for lime kilns, of which there are several nearby. The Kepwick quarries developed into a major undertaking in the early 19thC with a tramway linking the quarry with the valley bottom and then across country to a series of large kilns [SE4390] close to the present A19. This lime would have then been transported to the developing iron and steel industries of Stockton and Middlesbrough.
