Swanage (or Swanwich), market town and par. with ry. sta., Isle of Purbeck, Dorset, 9 miles SE. of Wareham, 3163 ac. (240 water), pop. 2357; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-days, Tuesday and Friday. The town stands at the S. side of Swanage Bay, and is a pleasant and prosperous place engaged in the quarrying of Purbeck stone, upwards of 60 quarries of which are in the neighbourhood. The most interesting architectural feature of the town is the Early English church of St Mary. Swanage Bay is 2 miles wide and penetrates 1 mile, and affords good shelter in westerly winds.
