Slindon Bottom, West Sussex

Track alongside the Slindon Park Pale

Uploader's Comments

There was a deer park at Slindon as early as the 13th century. It was famous for its beech trees but many of these were lost in the Great Storm of October 1987. Around the edge of the park, a pale was constructed so that deer could enter the park from outside but could not get out. The Pale consisted of a bank with a fence built on top and ditches on either side. The remains of the Pale is to the right of the track here. This is the origin of the phrase "Beyond the pale".
