The arboretum is in two parts: this one, called Silk Wood, is larger than the other called The Old Arboretum, to the north-east. In contrast to The Old Arboretum, which is largely decorative and stocked with exotic tree species, Silk Wood has as its heart traditional working woodland, though there are exotica such as the National Japanese Maple Collection within it.
