Newbury Pond, West Sussex

Holy Trinity Churchyard, Cuckfield

Uploader's Comments

Cuckfield was a market town from the time of Henry III until 1868 when the market was transferred to Haywards Heath station. It has become suburbanised to the north and east but the old part is still attractive and unspoiled. There are old coaching inns and other Georgian houses and shops. In its heyday, Cuckfield had a regular coach service to London. When it was proposed to bring the London to Brighton line through Cuckfield the local landowners held a protest meeting as a result of which the line was diverted through the heath to the east which is now Haywards Heath. To the west of the original part is Cuckfield Park which has helped prevent development and to the south beyond the church you are straight away out in fields.
