Loch na Clarlaich, Highland

Dun Caan across an unnamed lochan

Uploader's Comments

Anyone approaching Dun Caan by the path from Balmeanach will get a surprise here. Dun Caan's cone appears to rise directly behind the lochan, but there is a 30m broken cliff beyond which must be descended before the final climb to the summit. As Raasay has some of the most complex geology in the Hebrides, it is fitting that there should be another change at this point. Ahead is the basaltic cone of Dun Caan sitting on underlying Jurassic sedimentary rocks, whilst this lochan sits in a shallow basin carved into 'granophyre and granite' [according to a geological map].
