Devizes, municipal borough and market town with ry. sta., N. Wilts, on the Kennet and Avon Canal, 21 miles NW. of Salisbury and 86 miles W. of London, 907 ac., pop. 6645; P.O., T.O., 3 Banks, 3 newspapers. Market-day, Thursday; has mfrs. of silk and snuff, and a large foundry, where agricultural steam-engines and implements are made. Malting is carried on. The corn market is one of the most important in the West of England. St John's Church dates from the reign of Henry I. D. returned 1 member to Parl. until 1885.
