NE. of Ladybank Junction, 33¾ NE. of Edinburgh, and 424 NW. of London -- par., 5736 ac., pop. 7404; parl. burgh, pop. 5010; royal burgh, pop. 4964; P.O., T.O., 5 Banks, 4 newspapers.Market-day, Tuesday; has considerable trade in corn, besides some malting, brewing, tanning, flax-spinning, and weaving. A mound to the E. of the town, now called School Hill, was formerly occupied by a stronghold of the Macduffs. C. unites with St Andrews, Pittenweem, Crail, East and West Anstruther, and Kilrenny in returning 1 member to Parliament.
