Ruins, Tusdale

Uploader's Comments

These ruins in Tusdale speak of an older settlement pattern than is displayed in modern crofting townships. The houses and other buildings are clustered together as opposed to being sited one to a croft. This may have been to preserve valuable arable land and, in being grouped in this way, the houses may have enjoyed an element of protection from the elements. On Skye, as in other areas, land in crofting communities was often worked under the runrig system with land held in common and allocated to individuals by the drawing of lots or according to a fixed rota. This ensured that each household enjoyed a fair share of both better and poorer land over time.
